PYONGYANG – North Korea claims that about 800,000 of its citizens have voluntarily joined or re-enlisted in the country’s military to fight against the United States (US). This was revealed by the North Korean government newspaper, Saturday (18/3/2023).
“About 800,000 students and workers across the country expressed a desire to enlist or re-enlist in the military to fight against the United States,” the Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported.
North Korea’s claim comes after Pyongyang on Thursday (16/3/2023) launched a Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in response to ongoing US-South Korean military exercises.
North Korea fired an ICBM into the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan on Thursday, hours before South Korea’s president flew to Tokyo for a summit discussing ways to counter the nuclear-armed North Korea.
North Korea’s ballistic missiles are banned under UN Security Council resolutions and the launches have drawn condemnation from governments in Seoul, Washington and Tokyo.
South Korean and American troops began an 11-day joint drill, dubbed “Shield of Freedom 23,” on Monday, held on a scale not seen since 2017 to counter North Korea’s growing threat.
Kim accused the United States and South Korea of ratcheting up tensions with the military drills.
