JAKARTA – The young chess player Adi Wibisana Sankana won the gold medal at the 2023 National Chess Championship (Kejurnas) at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta. Adi is a junior athlete from South Sulawesi Province.
According to an Antara report, Saturday (18/3/2023) evening, Adi managed to beat Justin from West Kalimantan and Banyu Giri from East Java who finished second and third. Adi won a gold medal in the seven-year age group standard chess category.
Chairman of the Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) of South Sulawesi, Hamka, expressed his joy at Adi’s achievement in this National Championship. Sulsel still has the chance to win medals in the fast chess and pawn chess categories because several athletes will still be performing. Hamka hopes that Adi’s achievement will increase the motivation and enthusiasm of other athletes to show their best abilities in that category.
“Adi emerged as the best in the standard chess category for the seven-year age group. We are of course very grateful for the athletes’ achievements in this national championship,” said Hamka when contacted.
PB Percasi fielded six athletes in this National Championship, which was held from 14 to 19 March 2023. They traveled at their own expense without financial assistance from the South Sulawesi KONI.
The chairman of the Central KONI, Lt. Gen. Retired Marciano Norman, appreciated the 49th Chess National Championship in 2023 which was attended by 1,500 participants. The Central KONI supports athlete development carried out by PB Percasi, especially for athletes at an early age who are believed to be emerging at this National Championship.
