BANDUNG – Indonesia calls for more people-to-people exchanges within the framework of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) in response to increasing global geopolitical pressure.

This was conveyed by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Director of American and European Intra-regional and Inter-regional Cooperation, Nidya Kartikasari, in the ASEM Day 2023 seminar with the theme “Reigniting ASEM: the Future of Asia and Europe from Asia’s Perspective”.

The seminar was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR) and the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF).

Teuku Rezasyah, an observer on international issues, highlighted the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the rivalry between the United States (US) and China which has changed the dynamics of relations between Asian countries and the West, including Europe.

According to him, intergovernmental organizations such as the United Nations have again proven unable to stop conflicts, instead economic relations can actually be conflict relievers.

This is in line with the view of UNPAR international relations expert, Purwadi Hermawan, who sees the importance of ASEM for Europe to form norms and become an entry point for market expansion into the Asian region.

Nidya underlined the global geopolitical pressure. According to him, the tension in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has greatly affected cooperation in intergovernmental forums, including ASEM.

In response to this, there needs to be a breakthrough in track II diplomacy that involves the public at large, so that inter-regional connectivity does not stop.

According to him, this is where the important role of the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) as an organization under the auspices of ASEM is mandated to encourage people-to-people exchange in Asia and Europe.
