JAKARTA – On March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight 370 or MH370 suddenly disappeared from radar on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The Boeing 777 was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew at the time of its disappearance, and as people searched for the plane, theories began to circulate about what really happened.

Netflix examines all the different possible explanations for MH370’s disappearance in its new documentary “MH370: The Plane That Disappeared”, which premieres Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

Since the disappearance of MH370, authorities from Malaysia, China and Australia have conducted an extensive search for the plane without success, the search officially ending in January 2017.

The families of those missing are still searching for answers, and on 7 March 2023 it was reported by the Guardian that they were urging the Malaysian government to launch another search as US marine robotics company Ocean Infinity claimed it had new evidence that could lead to answers.

In a statement by Voice370, a group run by passengers’ relatives, they said: “While the closest relatives of passengers and crew members seek to rebuild our lives, threats to global aviation safety remain a living issue.”

“As long as we remain in the dark about what happened to MH370, we will never be able to prevent a similar tragedy. Therefore, we believe that the search for MH370 must be carried out to completion,” the statement continued.

MH370’s last contact occurred as the aircraft entered Vietnamese airspace in the early hours of March 8, 2014, but it was discovered the flight had changed course.

Following MH370’s last communications, the aircraft suddenly made a sharp left turn and re-entered Malaysian airspace before flying for nearly six hours over the Indian Ocean then disappearing completely from radar.
