JAKARTA – The U-20 Indonesian National Team will be the sole representative of Southeast Asia at the 2023 U-20 World Cup. The reason is, Vietnam U-20 failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the U-20 Asian Cup.
Vietnam U-20 actually has the opportunity to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup and has the potential to win the group. Moreover, The Golden Stars – the nickname of the Vietnam National Team – managed to win 2-1 over Qatar and 1-0 over Australia in two Group B matches at the U-20 Asian Cup.
However, Vietnam U-20 had to get disappointing results after losing 1-3 to Iran U-20 in the last match of Group B. The match was presented at the Istiqlol Stadium, Fergana, Tuesday (7/3/2023).
The defeat to Iran U-20 made Vietnam U-20 have to bury its dream of appearing in the 2023 U-23 World Cup. The reason is, The Golden Stars finished third in the final Group B standings with six points.
Even though Iran U-20 and Australia U-20 have the same points as Vietnam U-20, the two teams have the right to advance to the quarter-finals after winning on goal difference. Iraq U-20 won Group B, while Australia U-20 finished runner-up.
Meanwhile, Vietnam U-20’s failure to penetrate the quarter-finals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup has made the U-20 Indonesian National Team the only Southeast Asian representative in the upcoming U-20 Cup. This is because Garuda Nusantara – the nickname of the U-20 Indonesian National Team – has host status and automatically passes.
On the other hand, the U-20 Indonesian National Team also had the same fate as Vietnam U-20 which failed to advance to the quarter-finals of the U-20 Asian Cup. Garuda Nusantara only collected four points from three games and had to settle for third place in the final standings of Group A.
Meanwhile, 20 countries have confirmed themselves to appear in the U-20 World Cup. The remaining four slots will be contested by the teams appearing in the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup.
Currently, Uzbekistan U-20, Iraq U-20, Iran U-20 and Australia U-20 are the four teams that have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup. Meanwhile, four places are still waiting for the final results from Group C and Group C. D who will compete on Wednesday (8/3/2023).
Meanwhile, the four Asian representatives who will appear in the U-20 World Cup will be taken from the semifinals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup. This means that eight teams must fight to the best of their ability to advance to the semifinals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup in order to secure a place in 2023 U-20 World Cup.
The U-20 World Cup will take place in Indonesia from 20 May – 11 June 2023. Of course appearing at the event is a great pride for every player who has succeeded in bringing his country through.
