JAKARTA – International Women’s Day or International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. Today the annual Doodle celebrates International Women’s Day 2023!

International Women’s Day is a global observance celebrating the historical, cultural and political achievements of women. The commemoration of International Women’s Day is also to support taking action against gender inequality around the world.

International Women’s Day was first celebrated on February 28, 1909 in New York and was organized by the Socialist Party of America. Even the demonstration by women in Petrograd which was carried out on March 8, 1917 sparked the Russian Revolution.

International Women’s Day was officially made a national holiday in Soviet Russia in 1917, and is widely celebrated in both socialist and communist countries. In 1910, the Leader of the ‘Women’s Office’ Clara Zetkin proposed an idea to establish an International Women’s Day which suggested that every country celebrate one day a year to support the action of women’s demands.

The idea was approved by the women’s conference from 17 countries which has a total of 100 women. In 1977, International Women’s Day was inaugurated as an annual celebration by the United Nations to fight for women’s rights and bring about world peace.
