23 people died in the collapsed palace, the only survivor: The film saved me

Gürkan Öztürk, who was pulled out after 63 hours from the rubble of the five-story building in Hatay that collapsed in the powerful earthquake of February 6, captured the media in Turkey when he asked for a book while being transported by ambulance to the hospital.

The 19-year-old, who intends to study at the Faculty of Medicine, stated that he managed to survive under the rubble with the help of the films he had seen before the earthquake.

“I watch movies, which teach me what to do when I’m in a difficult situation. Search and rescue teams pulled out the dead bodies of 23 people from the ruins of the palace. Only I managed to survive”, said the 19-year-old.

He further stated the coolness he showed while trapped helped him get out alive. “I don’t think that crying will solve anything, people who act calmly are more successful.

He confessed that the movie “San Andreas Fault”, which talks about a powerful earthquake that hits America, gave him a big help. “The film made me think coldly. As soon as I felt the earthquake I lay down on the edge of the tie. People died trying to escape the corridor. I lay down and managed to survive.”
