White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned Russia’s “fake” referendum on occupied Ukraine. He described the process as “managed and manipulated” and “straight out of the Kremlin playbook.”
Jean-Pierre, on Wednesday (28/9), made the comments at a White House presentation, a day after pro-Russian officials said that an overwhelming number of people in all four occupied Ukrainian territories voted to join Russia in a referendum held by the Kremlin. .
Calling the results of the referendum a “coercion and disinformation by puppet authorities,” the White House said Russia’s actions “are clearly fraudulent and have no legal significance whatsoever.
“We will never acknowledge this illegal and illegitimate annexation attempt,” Jean-Pierre said.
That predetermined outcome opened the door for a dangerous new phase in Russia’s seven-month invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin has threatened to deploy more troops to the battle and possibly use nuclear weapons. [ka/jm]
