The United Education Union has proposed to teachers who have been on strike since August 25 to suspend it from October 3 to January next year to allow room for finding a solution with the government to meet the demands of theirs. The decision will depend on the attitudes of the school unions in Kosovo.
Government officials today called on teachers to end the strike during a session of the Kosovo parliament, which was permeated with fierce debates between the government and the opposition.
Opposition parties supporting the demands of the unions asked the government to find a solution to end the blockade in the education system.
“320,000 students who have been at home for 29 days, and this coming out here is a call. You are not the one who made the call, but the solution, we make the call and we are making the call to you while you are not listening, we are also calling to the unions but they are not listening either. You are here to make a solution and not a call, come out because you are no longer in the opposition, you are in power and have full control of power, there is no link of power that you do not control and here you come out and make a call, make a solution and not a call” , said the chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Memli Krasniqi.
“This is where I hate those who brought it here, the internal enemies are known, who are the internal enemies, the unions, the teachers, they must be hated and subjugated by this one. You are not subjugating the PAN (opposition parties), you are subjugating the teachers, and they will reveal their face when the time comes.” said the chairman of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that his government has made efforts to meet the demands of the unions by helping all categories of employees in Kosovo to face the increase in prices.
“The reasoning of the teachers, educators, the education union and the strike council has been that the prices have increased and the prices have increased for everyone and for everyone we have the package to deal with inflation. The problem has not been specific even in their reasonableness that they have increased the demands and are on strike. They are a special category, but the problem is not specific”, said Prime Minister Kurti.
The education workers demand an additional 100 euros per month until the approval of the Law on Wages. The government has offered an additional 50 euros per month for the rest of this year, as part of a package to deal with inflation. The meetings between the parties so far have not produced results in the alignment of positions that would pave the way to end the strike which has left over 320,000 students out of the learning process.
