Suara.com – Organizers of the Adelaide International Australian Open today revealed world number one Ashleigh Barty will start her 2022 season at the Grand Slam warm-up tournament in the first week of January.
The Wimbledon champion, who won the tournament on his 2020 debut, last played competitively at the US Open in early September before returning to Australia.
Barty, who was named WTA’s “Player of the Year” this week after winning five titles in 2021, will join Memorial Drive with reigning champion Iga Swiatek and former world number one Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova.
Meanwhile, according to Reuters, Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka and US Open winner Emma Raducanu will be in the spotlight at the two-week tournament at Melbourne Park.
Osaka, now ranked 13th in the world, also cut her 2021 season short after crashing out of the US Open the same year she withdrew from the French Open and missed Wimbledon citing mental health.
British teenager Raducanu will use the tournament to adjust to Australian conditions on his first visit to Melbourne Park as he looks to continue his sensational title journey at Flushing Meadows.
World number two Aryna Sabalenka and last year’s US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez will also play in Adelaide, which will host nine of the top 10 players in the world rankings for women.
Rafael Nadal, who has decided not to take part in the ATP Cup in Sydney in the first week of the year, will star in the ATP 250 tournament in Melbourne from 4-9 January 2022.
World number one Novak Djokovic is listed as part of the Serbian team for the ATP Cup, but his involvement in the Australian tennis season remains uncertain due to vaccination requirements.
Roger Federer, who shares a record 20 Grand Slam titles with Djokovic and Nadal, has confirmed he will not be traveling to Australia as he is recovering from knee surgery.
