Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig were charged with espionage in 2018, days after Canadian police arrested the Chief Financial Officer Huawei , Meng Wanzhou, by order United States of America (US). The detentions have fueled diplomatic tensions for years.
Meng Wanzhou herself left Canada today after reaching an agreement with US prosecutors.
At a news conference, Trudeau said Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig had gone through an unusually difficult ordeal.
“This is good news for all of us that they are on their way home to their families,” he said.
“Over the past 1,000 days, they have shown strength, tenacity, resilience and sincerity,” he added. BBC, Saturday (25/9/2021)

Trudeau said the two men would arrive in Canada Saturday morning. They were accompanied by Canadian Ambassador to China Dominic Barton.
Kovrig is a former diplomat employed by the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think tank. While Spavor is a founding member of an organization that facilitates international business and cultural relations with North Korea (North Korea).
