Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) said at around 4.30pm that 19 Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLA-AF) aircraft entered the southwest region of the island’s ADIZ. The 19 aircraft consisted of 12 Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, two Shaanxi Y-8 (Y-8 ASW) anti-submarine aircraft, two Xian H-6 bombers, one Shaanxi Y-8 (Y-8) electronic warfare aircraft. -8 EW), and two Shenyang J-11 fighter jets.
Then, continued MND, at 19:15 there were five additional Chinese military aircraft that infiltrated the southwest corner of Taiwan’s ADIZ. This time, two Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, one Shaanxi KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft (KJ-500 AEW&C), and two Shenyang J-11 fighters were spotted.
In both cases, the Taiwan Air Force, as quoted Taiwan News, responded by deploying several fighter jets to repel the Chinese planes, broadcasting radio alerts, and tracking the planes with ground-based anti-aircraft missiles.
China’s aggressive move came a day after Taiwan submitted a formal application to participate in the CPTPP. Some analysts have speculated that the unusually large number of military aircraft could be Beijing’s attempt to intimidate Taiwan into thinking twice about joining a trade group or to bully CPTPP members into rejecting Taiwan’s application.

The combined 24 aircraft witnessed on Thursday marked the largest single-day intrusion of PLAAF aircraft into Taiwan’s ADIZ. The largest attack by Chinese military aircraft on Taiwan’s ADIZ occurred on June 15, 2021, when a total of 28 military aircraft entered the southern tip of the ADIZ, including one Shaanxi Y-8 anti-submarine warfare aircraft, four Xian H-6 bombers, one electronic warfare aircraft. Shaanxi Y-8, two Shaanxi KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft, 14 Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, and six Shenyang J-11 fighter jets.
Taiwan is an island that has been self-governing for years after civil war broke out in mainland China. However, Beijing to this day still considers the island part of China. The Chinese Communist Party regime has even vowed to subdue Taipei both peacefully and by military force.
