Former star Barcelona and Inter Milan he made the announcement on his personal Instagram social media page on Tuesday (21/9/2021) local time. This he did because of his love for the country of his birth Cameroon and determined to advance football.
“Time is running out. Waiting is not an option. It’s time to rebuild our football,” said Eto’o as quoted by the BBC.
The announcement by Eto’o comes amid controversy in Cameroon after candidates with dual citizenship were told they could not stand in the election. And Eto’o was granted dual Spanish citizenship during his time at Barcelona.

So far, Et’o is the third former Cameroon national team player to run for president of the Cameroon football federation. Jules Denis Onana and Emmanuel Maboang Kessack, who played for Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup, are also running.
The election for the president of the Cameroon football federation will take place on 11 December 2021 following the Africa Cup of Nations which will start in Cameroon on 9 January 2022.
As is well known, Eto’o had an extraordinary playing career and managed to win domestic and European titles in Spain and Italy.
The 40-year-old is his country’s record scorer with 56 goals in 118 games and also enjoyed short stints in the Premier League with Chelsea and Everton and ended his playing career in Qatar.
Not only that, at international level, Eto’o has helped Cameroon win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002 and was a gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
