JAKARTA –

The Twitter world was shocked when “Coldplay” invited President Jokowi to intervene to tackle climate change. The famous British band wants Jokowi to join and form a coalition with the Ban Ki-Moon Centre, a quasi-international organization based in Vienna, Austria that focuses on global issues.

“@jokowi will you join @bankimooncentre and the coalition of Indonesian climate supporters on #GlobalCitizenLive to make a commitment to the planet? Where you lead, others will follow,” wrote “Coldplay” on his official Twitter account, Saturday (18/9) .

“Coldplay” does not only invite Jokowi. Similar invitations were also addressed to leaders of countries and heads of government of other countries such as French President Emmanuel Macron. But until now, Jokowi himself has not replied to the tweet from “Coldplay”.

Spokesperson for the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadjroel Rachman, said that the President had not yet given an official stance regarding the “Coldplay” invitation. Through a reply from his Twitter account, he thanked him for the invitation and ensured that Jokowi was committed to overcoming this climate crisis.

“Thank you very much “Coldplay” for the invitation. President Jokowi targets Net Zero Emission by 2060 and supports the Global Methane Pledge as Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC),” he tweeted via Twitter account @Fadjroel, Sunday (19/9).

Jokowi’s Policy

Then what is Jokowi’s commitment to repairing environmental damage and combating the effects of climate change? The Manager of Policy Studies at the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) Boy Sembiring said the various solutions offered by the government to address this problem were wrong and false.

He gave an example of how the government issued the Minerba Amendment Law (UU) which actually facilitates the licensing of the establishment of coal mining companies and extends their operating permits. He also saw that coal production in the last three years continued to increase in line with rising commodity prices by reviving mines that had stopped operating. In fact, the mining sector is one of the biggest contributors to climate change issues in the world.

He continued, through the Job Creation Law specifically in the forestry sector, for example, it even legalized mining or plantation activities that previously did not have a permit in forest areas. At least 3.4 million hectares of Indonesia’s forest area will be reduced by the existence of the Job Creation Law only to serve the interests of oil palm plantation investment. In addition, various forest fires that often occur are illegal acts which, according to him, are facilitated by the state.

“If he says this is human? This is not the work of the state and the company. This is called the era of capital, because if we look at who is the biggest contributor to deforestation? Such a large emission release? That’s something facilitated by the state, which is obtained by corporations. It’s all legal activities, it’s capital, not real humans who carry out these activities,” he told VOA.

If the government has the passion to combat the effects of global warming and repair environmental damage, these policies and regulations must be changed immediately, he added.

According to him, the “Coldplay” step by inviting Jokowi to participate in saving the earth is quite appropriate. Although, it will not necessarily be taken seriously, but pressure from outside will tend to be listened to more than voices or pressures that come from Indonesia itself.

“We hope that when there is pressure from “Coldplay” the government will not change itself. At least the more people who are aware, the more people who find out, the more they are aware and participate in pressuring the government to improve previous policies that are not pro-human and environmental aspects. (“Coldplay”) this is just a lighter,” he said.

Not Giving Space for New and Renewable Energy (EBT) to Develop

In line with Boy, Greenpeace Indonesia Climate and Energy Campaign researcher Adila Isfandiari sees the policies made by the Jokowi government have not been fully committed to saving the earth. Regarding the climate crisis, Indonesia in its National Determine Contribution (NDC) said it would only reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent in 2030.

This is considered not in line with the Paris Agreement (Paris Agreement) which aims to keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius and encourage efforts to limit temperature rises further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

“There are a lot of people who say this is not enough to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. Even climate action tracker also made an analysis that if all these countries follow the same target as Indonesia in their NDC, it will bring an increase temperature us up to four degrees Celsius. So many times, even 1.5 degrees, there is a lot of damage,” said Dila to VOA.

Furthermore, Dila assessed that the government’s commitment to encourage more use and utilization of new and renewable energy (EBT) is not strong enough. When viewed from the EBT Bill, the government includes various types of energy called new energy in quotation marks which continue to use coal with new technologies such as liquefied coal and the inclusion of nuclear energy.

“We are also confused as to why the EBT Bill seems to include new energies that should provide as much space as possible for renewable energy because we have a lot of potential in solar and wind. But yes, there are many illegal passengers,” he said.

EBT, he said, was also not given room to develop in Indonesia, because the government still continues to build coal-fired power plants, the majority of which are built on the island of Java. In fact, in Java itself the electricity supply is already over 45 percent.

The Celukan Bawang 2 power plant, funded by China, in Singaraj, Bali, October 29, 2020. China will stop funding coal projects overseas.

The Celukan Bawang 2 power plant, funded by China, in Singaraj, Bali, October 29, 2020. China will stop funding coal projects overseas.

“The year 2020 is there statement from ESDM, it’s in Java over supply(electricity supply) reached 45 percent. In condition over supply, we still want to build new ones and the majority are in Java. When you are rich, how do you get renewable energy? space to compete, because of the Coal PLTU? Once we build it, the operating life is around 30-40 years and when it is about to be retired, it can’t be because it is a loss, so it shouldn’t be built,” he explained.

As a Head of State, he said, Jokowi should show a more ambitious commitment in fighting the climate change crisis, especially since Indonesia is one of the largest emitting countries.

“Coldplay”, me-mention Pak Jokowi, should be welcomed by our government, because this is one of the spotlight which is good for Indonesia. But don’t forget, when we attend and participate, don’t let it just be on paper, the commitment must be implemented. Indonesia still wants to depend on fossil energy and when other countries want zero emissions by 2050, we are still in 2060 and even then there is no certainty from the government because in long term strategy he said only to inform, not a commitment,” he concluded.
