Iran’s President Criticizes US, Equates Sanctions with War

NEW YORK – New president Iran Ebrahim Raisi denounced the United States (US) sanctions imposed on his country as a war mechanism.

The statement was made Tuesday (21/9/2021) in his first speech at the United Nations as head of state.

He embodied a series of direct criticisms of the United States in the speech.

“Sanctions are a new way of the US war with the countries of the world,” said President Ebrahim Raisi.

Although around 100 heads of state and government attended a meeting of the leaders of the UN General Assembly in New York this week, Raisi delivered his remarks from Tehran, or remotely as several other government leaders have chosen.

Raisi, who was sworn in last month after the election, is a conservative cleric and former head of the judiciary close to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
